Dear Friends,

Baseball fantastic Lou Gehrig is one of my heroes. His photograph is on the wall of my business office and I recall vividly seeing his uniform at baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Gehrig possibly was, in the phrases of his biographer, the finest initial baseman at any time to play the match. His report as a hitter and player usually remains, more than 70 many years following his death, the stuff of legend.

Just about everybody is acquainted now with the “Ice Bucket Problem,” in which ice water is poured above one’s head in the hope of creating presents to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association. ALS, commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Illness,” tragically lower short the Iron Horse’s life, and continues to be a debilitating illness for which there is no cure.

Sadly, as my colleague Dr. David Prentice notes, the ALSA has admitted that it provides some of its income to embryonic stem cell research.”

So, Dr. Prentice, one of America’s most distinguished stem mobile biologists, has suggested that alternatively of sending funds to the ALSA, you deliver it to substitute teams that are doing foremost-edge ALS research with no making use of human embryos. Alternatively, they use adult stem cells, the ethics and usefulness of which are unquestioned. Here’s a hyperlink to entry teams like the Mayo Clinic and the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center that are functioning to conquer ALS without having sacrificing nascent human lives.

I have been challenged by my sons and one of my nephews to stand beneath an ice bucket, as they have completed. I’m thinking about it. But 1 factor none of us has to consider about: Grownup stem cells help save lives, ethically, and that is anything to celebrate for the duration of baseball year and always.
